PFLP Says Fatah-Hamas Unity Government Won’t Happen

June 29, 2015

The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) began holding negotiations with the Hamas and Islamic Jihad terror organizations on Saturday to form a new unity government, but according to a senior member of the Communist terror group Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) the efforts are doomed to failure.

Rabah Muhanna of the PFLP’s politburo told the Palestinian Arab Ma’an News Agency on Sunday that “a few people think that the consensus government is about to be formed, but the truth is there will be no consensus government soon.”

After Palestinian Authority (PA) chairman Mahmoud Abbas dissolved the dysfunctional unity government earlier this month, a PLO committee on Saturday launched a week of talks with Hamas and Islamic Jihad, but officials say the negotiations will likely need extending.

Talks with Hamas come despite the fact that Abbas told French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius last Sunday that Hamas should not be included in the new government.

According to Muhanna, a new PLO unity government if and when it is formed should work to reconstruct Gaza, unify Palestinian Arab institutions and hold presidential and legislative elections.

Elections have not been held since Hamas won by a large majority in Gaza in 2006 and violently purged Abbas’s Fatah from the coastal enclave in 2007. The defunct state of politics in the PLO is illustrated by the fact that Abbas continues to hold his presidential post even though his term of office ended in January 2009.

Muhanna also called for the Palestinian Legislative Council to be reconvened after it fell out of service in 2007, along with the central election commission and committee for reconciliation.

Hamas and Fatah have remained bitter rivals despite the rapprochement agreement signed last April which torpedoed peace talks between the PA and Israel. Just last summer Hamas staged a coup in Judea and Samaria to oust the PA, in an attempt that was thwarted by the IDF.
