Law delaying retirement for grieving parents passes unanimously

July 26, 2016

The Knesset unanimously voted, on first reading, to pass a law that raises the retirement age for parents that lost children in tragic circumstances. The law was proposed by MK Bezalel Smotrich of the Jewish Home party.

Smotrich praised the unanimous vote, noting that the law also passed unanimously at the preliminary reading, as well as in the Committee of Labor and Welfare.

“Parents grieving over children lost in tragic circumstances hold on to life largely through continuing to go to work and maintaining a routine. Sitting at home mired in grief is the second option, and it is a very bad one.

“It is common that, when these parents get to retirement age, they fall into an abyss from which it is hard for them to extricate themselves,” Smotrich explained. “The goal of this law is to allow them another four years of productive life, of contributing to society with head above water.

“A grieving parent is a grieving parent,” Smotrich emphasized. “The knock at the door and the life that follows are the same life, with a big hole inside, whether we’re talking about the loss of a child in a security-related incident or in civilian life.

“A similar arrangement has already existed for parents of children that were in the security forces, now we are widening the scope with this law, so as to include parents of children [that died] in other tragic circumstances- with God’s help we shouldn’t see this ever happen.”
