Judea-Samaria District commander resigns
November 24, 2015Judea-Samaria Police District Commander Shlomi Michael resigned from his post Tuesday, leaving the police without explanation just as terrorism spikes in the region.
Associates told Channel 2 that Michael feels he has exhausted his career path in the police, having previously served as the police’s counter-terrorism unit commander.
While the move seems sudden, Michael submitted his resignation to the Police Commissioner – now Roni Alshich – over a month ago.
However, the Israel Police chose not to publicize Michael’s impending resignation until Tuesday, nor have any public comments been made so far about his decision to leave.
Michael’s resignation follows new heights in terrorism throughout Judea and Samaria, with multiple attacks attempted – and several successfully carried out – on security forces and civilians on a daily basis.
Michael was born in 1964 in Tel Aviv, and served as a combat soldier in the Golani Brigade. He then joined the SWAT team of the Border Police, rising through the ranks until he was appointed to head the unit’s Operation Division.
He was later appointed a top commander in the Israel Police’s undercover unit, Tel Aviv Central District Commander, and SWAT team commander.
Michael has, among other things, dealt with the kidnapping and murder of three Israeli teenagers in summer 2014, the elimination of the terrorist who attempted to assassinate Temple Mount rights activist Yehuda Glick, and the arrest of the terrorist who murdered senior police official Baruch Mizrachi.
