An Israeli tourist plummeted to his death on Wednesday, during a hiking trip in southern Jordan.

The 23-year-old man was visiting the Hashemite Kingdom with a group of four friends.

On Wednesday evening the group hiked through a remote region some 20 miles south of Petra. At around 5:30 p.m. the man involved in the incident tripped and fell from a cliff. The man lost consciousness after the fall.

His friends quickly notified the Israeli Foreign Ministry, which contacted the Jordanian government.

Jordan dispatched a rescue team on foot, which only managed to arrive at the scene after midnight. The rescue team declared the man dead on the scene and retrieved his body.

The man’s family was notified early Thursday morning.
