Councilor Claims Signature Forged in Terror Theater Funding

July 2, 2015

A day after Haifa Mayor Yona Yahav chose to return funding to the Al Midan Theater, a city council member who apparently signed on to the financing alleged he could not have given his approval, as he was recovering from surgery.

Al Midan recently sparked outrage with its play “The Parallel Time,” about the life of Walid Daka, one of four terrorists who murdered IDF soldier Moshe Tamam in 1984.

Funding for the theater was pulled by Sports and Culture Minister Miri Regev (Likud), but Yahav replaced the lost funding with money from his municipal budget, following the recommendation of a committee of inquiry on the subject.

A member of that committee, Shai Blumenthal told Walla! News on Thursday that he “did not fully understand what the situation was when I was telephoned, and in any case I am opposed to the decision.”

Blumenthal, of the Jewish Home faction, alleged in a Facebook post that the committee called him before publishing their decision to return funding, but that he did not personally sign any document.

“In light of reports last night on the return of funding to the Al Midan Theater by the Haifa Municipality, I hereby make clear: I oppose the return of of money to the theater,” Blumenthal wrote.

“The signing of my name on the committee’s decision is not my signature. Prior to the publication of the committee’s decision, while I was hospitalized after surgery, they talked with me and probably said things I wasn’t fully aware of.”

Blumenthal’s declaration comes hours after Yisrael Beytenu chairman Avigdor Liberman denounced Yahav’s decision and demanded the mayor resign for his confusion “between freedom of speech and freedom to incite.”

The Haifa Municipality dismissed the city council member’s claims, saying that “Shai Blumenthal instructed the Mayor’s Office to add his signature after reading the document and approving it.”
