Bodies Found Days Later from New York Gas Explosion
March 30, 2015Three days after the massive gas explosion which wrecked three building in New York’s East Village last Thursday, two bodies were unearthed from the heavy debris on Sunday.
The identities of the two victims were not publicized, reports BBC, although two people have been reported missing from the sushi restaurant that bore the brunt of the explosion.
The two missing persons are Nicholas Figueroa, who was on a date at the restaurant at the time, and Moises Lucon who worked there. Figueroa’s date, currently receiving medical treatment in a hospital, said she only remembers staggering out of the wreckage before passing out.
Aside from the two fatalities, another 22 people were wounded, four of them critically, in the blast and fire that engulfed the building following it.
Officials said utility inspectors were in one of the three affected buildings just an hour before the explosion occurred.
They had declared the plumbing and gas infrastructure in the building as faulty, locking the gas line before leaving.
Following the explosion, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio announced an investigation would be launched to clarify if anyone had tampered with the gas supply, thereby causing the blast.
At the time of the incident, which took place at a residential and commercial building on 125 Second Avenue, over 25 firefighting units and 100 firefighters were immediately dispatched to the scene.
