Barkat Vows to Keep Jerusalem United Despite Terror

October 6, 2015

Jerusalem mayor Nir Barkat urged the State of Israel to crack down on incitement on Tuesday, in the wake of a string of attacks of Israeli Jews in the capital.

“This wave of violence is unequivocally due to wild incitement, which is based on disinformation,” Barkat stated to Army Radio. “I advised the Prime Minister and the government to be tougher on agitators – [PA Chairman Mahmoud] Abbas should pay the price for these provocations.”

Barkat confirmed, as well, that closing the Temple Mount and the Old City of Jerusalem to Arabs was done not only with his approval, but by his request.

“I proposed it to the Jerusalem District Commander,” he said, “for the simple reason that during clashes and other times like the holidays, the Israel Police already closes Herod’s Gate [in the Muslim Quarter – ed.] to Jews. It was the right thing to do.”

No matter what, he maintained, Jerusalem must remain united.

“The strategy for Jerusalem is [to keep it] one city, interconnected and united, through an investment in the quality of life of its residents,” he said. “Arab residents of Jerusalem want Jerusalem united – they do not want to be like Gaza, Syria, and Lebanon. They understand where the city is and where it’s going.”
