Arizona Man Charged with Supporting ISIS
August 27, 2015An Arizona man has been charged with supporting the Islamic State (ISIS) by helping a New York college student get terror training in Syria, NBC News reported Thursday.
Ahmed Mohammed El Gammal, also known as Jammie Gammal, 42, of Avondale, Arizona, was indicted for providing material support to ISIS.
Prosecutors say Gammal posted comments on social media supporting the group, which were seen by a 24-year-old college student in New York City.
Last October, court documents say, El Gammal traveled to Manhattan, met the student, and talked about the student’s plans to go to the Middle East. Prosecutors say Gammal put him in touch with a person in Turkey who offered to help arrange travel.
The student left for Istanbul in January 2015 and, with Gammal’s help, traveled on to Syria where he received military-type training from ISIS between early February and at least early May 2015,” according to court documents quoted by NBC News.
El Gammal was arrested on Monday in Avondale, and the case was unsealed Thursday.
Court documents do not provide the name or current status of the student. According to the indictment, the student contacted Gammal from Syria on May 7 and said “everything is going according to plan.”
“Individuals like Gammal who allegedly serve as facilitators for ISIL fuel the hatred and radicalization that keep terrorist organizations like ISIL alive,” said Preet Bharara, the Attorney in Manhattan where the charges were filed, using another acronym for the group.
A string of Americans were found in recent months to have attempted to join ISIS or support the group in other ways. These included a 16-year-old accused of planning to join the group and who was found guilty of illegal possession of a firearm in South Carolina, having been charged with this offense as South Carolina has no anti-terrorism laws.
His conviction followed the arrest of six Somali Americans from Minnesota who allegedly planned to travel to Syria to join ISIS.
In March, California resident Adam Dandach, who tried to travel to Syria last year, was charged with attempting to join ISIS.
A week earlier, three New York residents were arrested for plotting to join ISIS in Syria. One of the suspects had expressed intent to buy a machine gun and shoot police officers and FBI agents if thwarted in his plan to join ISIS.
