In a significant day for the world sporting community, soccer star Lionel Messi and former Olympic sprinter Oscar Pistorius were both sentenced to jail on Wednesday.

Messi, who plays for Argentina and Barcelona, was found guilty of tax fraud to the amount of €4.1 million ($4.5 million US) between 2007 and 2009. He was sentenced to 21 months in prison and about €2 million in fines ($2.2 million US).

His father and co-defendant, Jorge Messi, was also sentenced to a prison term and financial penalty of €1.5 million ($1.7 million US).

However, the BBC reports that neither Lionel nor Jorge is expected to actually spend time in jail, because Spain allows sentences under two years to be served as probation.

Separately, a South African appeals court increased Pistorius’s charge and punishment. He was initially found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to five years in prison for shooting killing his girlfriend through a bathroom door. The prosecution appealed the ruling and a later court declared Pistorius guilty of murder. He will now serve six years.

Pistorius still claims that he thought his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp was an intruder, though Judge Thokozile Masipa said that he did not take proper precautions, such as firing a warning shot.
