MK Shelly Yechimovich (Zionist Union) slammed opposition chairman Yitzhak Herzog on Thursday for his show of “total support” for Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s position on the Iranian nuclear deal.

Netanyahu and Herzog met Tuesday evening and agreed on a united front against the deal struck between the six world powers and Iran hours prior. 

Yechimovich, however, asserted to Army Radio that standing alongside Netanyahu is a “mistake.”

“I look askance at [Herzog’s] position of absolute support for Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, precisely because of what the head of my party said [before the agreement announced],” Yechimovich explained. 

Speaking at a Zionist Union meeting on Monday, Herzog contended that Netanyahu had “failed” in allowing the Iranian deal to go through by not doing “everything possible” to stop it.

“The person who brought us to a place of such unprecedented conflict is Netanyahu; I think it’s just a mistake [to work with him],” Yechimovich concluded. 

Yechimovich was the leader of the Labor party until she was supplanted by Herzog in 2013. Many though see the former journalist as a contender to head the party in the future. 

The politician also expressed her staunch opposition to any sort of unity government between Likud and Zionist Union. 

Rumors have flown in recent days, amidst Herzog and Netanyahu’s agreement to cooperate on Iran, that Zionist Union will join Netanyahu’s latest government. 

But Herzog silenced the rumors telling the Knesset that the fight against Iran could be done even while the party sat in the opposition.
