Venezeula’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Rafael Ramirez, suggested on Friday that Israel was guilty of pursuing a “final solution” against Palestinian Authority Arabs.
The comments came during a meeting of the UN Security Council. Venezuela currently holds one of the Security Council’s 10 rotating seats.
During the meeting, representatives of the Yesh Din organization, a far-left Israeli NGO, gave a presentation on “Price Tag” attacks by Israeli civilians on Arab targets.
Michael Sfard, a member of the Yesh Din organization, presented statistics on law enforcement efforts against such attacks, and suggested that the crimes were part of a concerted effort to drive Arabs out of the country.
During the presentation, Ramirez asked Sfard whether the State of Israel itself also such an agenda. He even went so far as to draw a direct comparison between Israel’s actions and the Nazi Holocaust.
“What is Israel planning to do with the Palestinians? Do the Israelis want the Palestinians to disappear? Is Israel preparing a ‘final solution for the Palestinians similar to what was done to them?”
Ramirez’s comments prompted condemnations from Israeli Ambassador Danny Danon.
“These are blunt anti-Semitic statements coming from the Venezuelan ambassador towards the Jewish nation,” Danon said.
Ramirez later apologized for his comments.
