Suicide bombing near Mohammed’s tomb

A suicide bombing has hit Islam’s second holiest city of Medina, al-Arabiya TV reported.

The explosion took place near the tomb of Mohammed, the founder of Islam.

Medina is considered the second holiest city in the world by Muslims, second only to Mecca.

Footage on al-Arabiya showed a blazing vehicle, and footage from social media showed a blazing vehicle. Other footage showed ambulances and police driving toward the area. There is no official comment about casualties yet.

The blast reportedly took place near the time of breaking the Ramadan fast, in the evening. During the month of Ramadan, Muslims fast all day and eat only at night. Ramadan is nearing its end, and the attack on Mohammed’s tomb appears to be timed to make a statement.

Though it is not yet clear who is behind the attack, suspicion will immediately be directed at ISIS, who are known to be opposed to shrines of any kind, even Mohammed’s tomb, as they consider these to be a manifestation of idolatry.
