The International Red Cross released an estimate Sunday stating that at least half a million people have been injured in the Syrian Civil War.
“At least half a million people have been wounded across the country and millions remain displaced and tens of thousands detained,” ICRC chief Magne Barth said in a statement.
“The wounded are often not cared for properly and the chronically ill often do not receive the treatment they need,” Barth added.
The humanitarian organization urged both the Syrian rebel factions and the government of President Bashar Assad to allow humanitarian assistance into the war-stricken country, which has been entangled in an ongoing civil war since 2011.
Earlier this month, UN humanitarian affairs coordinator Valerie Amos announced that at least 250,000 Syrians are beyond the reach of humanitarian aid. In November, she also stated that some 9.3 million Syrians are in desperate need of assistance.
The conflict has left at least 120,000 dead – including 11,000 children. At least 2.2 million people are estimated to have become refugees during that period, according to a UN report.
“Geneva II” talks to end the conflict are scheduled for January 22, 2014.
