Police Conduct Final Evacuation of Tel Aviv Suburb

Police forces arrived on Monday morning to the Tel Aviv suburb of Givat Amal to evict the last remaining eight families who continue to refuse to evacuate the area.

MK Ilan Gilon of the radical leftist Meretz party together with the families have holed themselves up in the homes and refuse to leave. Hundreds of supporters and activities are on the scene and promise to struggle to oppose the eviction.

The protesters claim that in contrast to earlier evacuations at the site, the residents have not been promised reimbursement for their homes due to a lack of legal proof of ownership.

“We demand that (Tel Aviv mayor) Ron Huldai stop the violence directed at residents and promise now an alternate roof for the families,” said representatives of the families residing in the suburb.

Back in September police forcibly evicted around 20 families from Givat Amal Bet. They were met by protesters, four of whom were arrested after opening a gas balloon in a potentially lethal act of protest.

Givat Amal was established during the 1948 War of Independence to defend the outskirts of Tel Aviv. Now, it has been swallowed up into central Tel Aviv due to the expansion of the city, and the families in the neighborhood have never received legal ownership rights. They have been conducting to a struggle to maintain their hold on the property since the 1980s.

The issue reached a head when billionaire businessman Yitzhak Tshuva recently bought the land with plans to build luxury residences on it, leading to the evacuations.
