Over 100 dead in Indian temple fire

A freak fireworks accident during a Hindu New Year festival has killed at least100 people Sunday, injuring 200 more.

One stray firework caused a chain reaction, provoking a rack of fireworks to explode inside the Puttingal temple in Paravur, Kerala, India at about 3:30 am local time, officials said.

A section of the building collapsed; electrical lines were also knocked down in the area surrounding the complex.

Rescue workers told the New York Times Sunday that rescue operations are still underway, some 6 hours after the incident.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is en route to the scene. His office stated to CNN Sunday morning that the wounded and their families will receive 50,000 rupees ( $751) in compensation.
