Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi called for an urgent meeting with the country’s military council on Sunday night, the Muslim Brotherhood party said on its Facebook page.

The urgent meeting came after an attack on a police station in north Sinai killed at least 15 Egyptian policemen.

Reuters reported that Egyptian security sources said the attackers had used a stolen police vehicle to launch the assault and had fired live ammunition at police officers at the station.

The Gaza-based terrorists then commandeered an Egyptian military armored personnel carrier (APC) and tried to use it to cross into Israeli territory. Some reports said there were two such APCs and that one of them blew up as it approached the Kerem Shalom crossing.

The IDF has instructed residents of the region to stay indoors and remain alert. In addition, civilians are asked to stay off of Road 232. The IDF said that no IDF soldiers are missing, and no abduction took place.

Gaza’s Hamas rulers condemned the attack, saying in a statement quoted by Reuters, “Hamas condemns this ugly crime which killed a number of Egyptian soldiers and extends its deep condolences to the families of the victims and to the leadership and the people of Egypt.”

Defense Minister Ehud Barak praised the IDF and the Shin Bet for foiling the attack and called on Egypt to work to prevent such terror attacks.

“The terrorists’ actions again show the need for determined Egyptian action to impose security and prevent terror in Sinai,” Barak said.

Earlier on Sunday, a surgical air strike by the Israel Air Force successfully eliminated at least two terrorists in a targeted terror cell in southern Gaza.

The strike was aimed at an Al-Qaeda-linked Global Jihad terror cell located near the Gaza-Egyptian border town of Rafiah.
