A spokesman for Jordan’s mission to the United Nations said on Monday his country will request an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council meeting on behalf of the Palestinian Authority (PA), reports The Associated Press (AP).

The spokesman, Laith Ibrahim Obeidat, confirmed the request and said his country, a council member, will ask the council president to set a date.

The Jordanian request comes following a letter from the PA’s Ambassador to the UN, Riyad Mansour, to the Security Council president.

In the letter, according to AP, Mansour calls on the international community to demand that Israel “cease forthwith all of its illegal settlement activities” in eastern Jerusalem and elsewhere.

Earlier on Monday, PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas said he has called for an emergency UN Security Council session over the constant cycle of Arab rioting and violence, blaming Israeli “aggression” for the unrest, both throughout Jerusalem in general and on the Temple Mount in particular.

The PA’s move surfaces amid high tensions in Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria, which saw an attack mowing down Israelis at the Ammunition Hill train stop on Wednesday night and an attack by a teenager throwing firebombs at Israeli civilians on Friday.

Also adding to tensions is an Israeli announcement that it will build 1,000 new homes in Jerusalem, a move that garnered criticism from the United States as well as from the European Union.
