Jerusalem Stabber: ‘I Hate Religious Jews’

The Jerusalem Magistrates’ Court extended by five days on Wednesday the confinement of an 18-year-old Arab terrorist from Bir Zeit, who stabbed a haredi man near Tzahal Square in central Jerusalem two weeks ago.

The terrorist has meanwhile told his Israel Security Agency (ISA, or Shin Bet) interrogators that he stole a knife in the Old City and selected a haredi man as his victim because, as he put it, he “hates the religious Jews.”

He also confessed that he had been involved in hurling firebombs and rocks at security forces near his home.

The prosecution told the court it intends to file charges soon.

The man who was stabbed is Avraham Goldschmidt, married with four children, from Betar Illit. He told the media from his hospital bed that he was on his way back from a Torah lesson, when he was stabbed by the terrorist.

“He came from behind me. I felt a blow to the stomach, and I saw a 17-year-old Arab holding a knife. I yelled to everyone, ‘a stabbing!’ – so everyone would get away. He came up to stab me again. I hit him with my tefillin bag, and he went backward – but then he came at me again. I ran to the pedestrian crossing and shouted that it was a stabbing and asked whoever has weapons to neutralize him. “

The stabber was caught by Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat and his bodyguard. Security camera footage shows how Barkat (in white shirt) and other members of his team tackled the terrorist, after the bodyguard pointed his gun at him.

Barkat then crossed the street and approached the wounded man, helping him to the sidewalk.

“I was driving with the car next to Tzahal Square when my team suddenly saw a terrorist with a knife right next to us,” Barkat said afterward. “I immediately jumped from the car, together with my bodyguard, he drew his weapon on him and we held on to the terrorist together until police arrived and immediately took care of the victim, who fortunately was lightly wounded.”

Videos show the arrest of the terrorist, as Otzma Yehudit candidate Baruch Marzel who happened to be at the scene as well faced off with him.

Security camera footage reveals how Barkat and his bodyguards subdued the terrorist.
