Former President George H.W. Bush, who broke a bone in his neck after falling last week, was released Sunday from a Maine hospital, reports CNN.
“A very grateful President GeorgeHWBush was discharged from @MaineMed after four days of treatment for a fractured vertebrae,” his spokesman Jim McGrath tweeted.
The 91-year-old Bush, the oldest living former president, went into the hospital on Wednesday after breaking his C2 vertebrae while at his summer home in Kennebunkport, Maine.
He was never disoriented and the injury did not result in any neurological problems, McGrath said Thursday.
Doctors treating the former president had called it “a significant injury” but said he was in excellent shape and anticipated he would make a full recovery. Bush will be wearing a neck brace as well as a large brace at times.
The 41st President suffers from a form of Parkinson’s disease, leaving him unable to walk. He uses a wheelchair or a scooter to get around, noted CNN.
Dr. William D’Angelo, a neurosurgeon who was treating Bush at Maine Medical Center, had estimated it would generally take someone of his age about three to four months to recover from the injury.
Bush is the oldest living former president, and he and his wife Barbara are also the longest-married presidential couple. In 2000 they beat John and Abigail Adams for that record, and this January they held their 70th anniversary.
The ex-president has not let his age keep him down; in June 2014 he skydived from an airplane to celebrate his 90th birthday, after having similarly done so at his 85th birthday.
The jump made Bush’s eighth, with his first time being in World War II when his plane was shot down over the Pacific, forcing him to parachute out.
Despite his adventures, however, Bush has also been hospitalized several times in recent years.
He was hospitalized in 2014 after suffering a shortness of breath. In 2012, he was in the hospital for several months after he contracted bronchitis.
Bush and his wife earlier this month appeared at several events in Maine with hundreds of his son Jeb’s top donors to his presidential campaign.
