Foreign Ministry: EU ambassador’s comments a ‘double standard’

Israel’s Foreign Ministry on Tuesday evening rejected the EU’s “double standard” in distinguishing between Palestinian Arab terrorism against Israelis and terrorism by the Islamic State (ISIS) group.

The remarks came in response to comments by the EU ambassador to Israel, Lars Faaborg-Andersen, who opined in a radio interview earlier on Tuesday that Palestinian Arab terror against Israel, unlike terror attacks by ISIS in Europe, should not be met by force.

“ISIS is organized terror,” he said, “and it should be countered with force. Palestinian terror should be met with diplomatic and political means.”

“We reject the distinction that the European Union’s ambassador makes between the Palestinian terror and ISIS. Both reject political dialogue,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon told Arutz Sheva in response.

“ISIS terrorism seeks to destroy Europe and Palestinian terrorism seeks to destroy Israel,” he continued.

“Ultimately, the remarks of the EU Ambassador constitute a double standard when it comes to terrorism that threatens us all,” concluded Nahshon.

Faaborg-Andersen’s remarks came on the heels of statements by Sweden’s Prime Minister Stefan Lofven, who said of the Palestinian attacks, which have claimed the lives of 22 people and left hundreds more wounded in just over two months: “No, it is not classified as [terrorism].”

“There is an international classification regarding what constitutes or does not constitute [terror]. As far as I know, the [stabbing attacks in Israel] are not defined as terror.”

He later clarified that he meant “that it was unclear if the knife attacks are organized by a group classified as a terrorist organization.”

“Nonetheless,” he said, “the attacks themselves do constitute terror.”

Swedish Foreign Minister Margot Wallstrom recently accused Israel of “executing” Palestinians, and provoked a firestorm of criticism, when she appeared to blame the terrorist attacks in Paris on “Palestinian frustration” with Israel.
