Woman Fired Over Facebook Photo of Jerusalem Stabber
October 7, 2015A female customer service representative at the Pelephone cellular phone company was dismissed by the company after posting on her Facebook page a photo of the terrorist who stabbed a Jewish teen in Jerusalem early Sunday morning, along with the words “shahid” (martyr) and, “my love”.
According to a report in the Globes financial newspaper, Pelephone received numerous complaints from customers who said that the employee’s Facebook post was offensive. Following the complaints, a company representative asked the employee to remove the photos but she refused, and was ultimately fired.
It should be noted that the employee claimed that she personally knew the terrorist and claimed that the Facebook post was intended only to express her condolences for the death of an acquaintance, not to express sympathy and support for the stabbing attack.
Pelephone said that the company issued a letter to all employees calling on them to avoid any manifestations of racism and to exercise restraint and tolerance at such a time.
The company said in response, according to Globes, “Pelephone employs people and serves customers from all sectors, and it does not express an opinion on political issues. This is a specific case of a company employee who expressed support and solidarity with terrorist activity on her Facebook page, in an offensive and inappropriate manner which is contrary to the norms and values of society.”
“Unfortunately,” the company continued, “she refused to remove these statements, despite requests [by the company] on the subject, so it was decided to terminate her employment in the company. Pelephone denounces and condemns statements that might be interpreted as offensive and calls on its employees to exercise restraint and tolerance.”
