‘Visit Holocaust survivors in Israel, not death camps in Poland’

May 5, 2016

The director of Israel’s religious school system, Dr. Avraham Lifshitz, spoke with Arutz Sheva about a unique new program for high school students.

For years Israeli high schools have included trips to Poland as part of Holocaust education. Now, however, as part of the new initiative, religious high school students will meet with Holocaust survivors living in Israel and document their stories of survival.

Lifshitz notes that presenting the Holocaust this way can create a far deeper understanding than trips to concentration camps in Poland.

“In this program of the state religious school system, 11th graders will pick a Holocaust survivor and interview them in his or her home. All interviews will be uploaded to the school system’s website.”

“This is now the fifth year of the program, and it’s simply unbelievable what this does for the Holocaust survivors. The students sit with them one on one, and people are so touched that we get hundreds [of people] thanking us.”

Lifshitz also mentioned the memorial candle project, which he said is another creative way to make the memory of the Holocaust tangible for young Israelis.

“This is the third year that we’ve taken this project upon ourselves. Students in the religious school system from all over the country receive a memorial candle with the name of someone who was murdered in the Holocaust, as well as a brief description of their life”.

“Every student gets a memorial candle, to be lit on Holocaust Remembrance Day, with the name of a Holocaust victim killed by the Nazis. This makes the stories of Auschwitz more tangible; they learn what was going on [day to day], what were the person’s plans, and their final prayers. In every home in the religious school system, students sit with their families at the table and tell them about this particular victim’s life. They get a lot more out of this than they do from the visit to Poland.”
