UK: New Royal Baby Makes First Public Appearance
May 3, 2015Britain’s “royal couple” – the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge – have presented their new baby daughter to the world after she was born Saturday morning.
Princess Kate and Prince William displayed the newest addition to the family – who is fourth in line to the throne – on the steps outside St Mary’s Hospital in London.
Although the highly popular couple took time to speak to the crowds of well-wishers gathered to celebrate the birth, they did not speak to the media. Instead, they headed straight for Kensington Palace.
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu lost no time in sending a message on Saturday night, writing, “on behalf of the Government of Israel, please accept my heartfelt congratulations on the birth of the Princess.”
“The joy felt by the British people today is shared by millions of people around the world, including in Israel. Please convey my warmest wishes to Her Majesty, the proud parents and the entire Royal Family,” wrote Netanyahu.
“Will and Kate” are extremely popular both in the UK and outside, with William second in line to the throne after his father, Prince Charles.
Kate’s pregnancy and birth has been followed with an almost obsessive interest in the UK – as was the case with their eldest, Prince George.
Despite playing a merely symbolic role politically, the British royal family are still seen as an important British cultural symbol.
