Top Al Nusra Military Commander Said Killed in Syria Airstrike

March 5, 2015

Al Nusra Front General Military Commander Abu Humam al-Shami was killed in an airstrike in Idlib, Syria, Al Jazeera reported Thursday.

The airstrike targeted a meeting of the Al Qaeda-linked Al Nusra Front commanders, according to the report, which was cited in Ya Libnan.

Up to four Al Nusra front commanders were killed in the airstrike, according to a report by Al Arabiya.

The airstrike is reportedly part of the campaign against ISIS that is being carried out by a US-led coalition.

Al-Shami, who is a Syrian national, is also known as Farouq al Suri.

Some reports say Jabhat al-Nusra’s leader, Abu Ahmed al-Julani, was present at the location during the strike.

Syrian sources said that besides al-Shami, Abu Omar al-Kurdi, a founder of the organization, Abu Albara al-Nasari and Abu Musaab al-Falastini were killed.

A senior US source told Reuters that coalition forces had not conducted an airstrike in the Idlib region in the last 24 hours.
