Terrorists fire on IDF soldiers near Gaza

May 3, 2016

Terrorists opened fire on IDF soldiers near the Gaza Belt community of Nahal Oz Tuesday, hours after Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu visited the area.

No injuries were reported, but engineering equipment near the site suffered damage.

Hours earlier, Netanyahu made a surprise visit to soldiers in and near Nahal Oz, along with Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon and IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Gadi Eizenkott.

The three visited the terror tunnel the IDF uncovered last month, and was briefed on updates in the region from Southern Command chief Gen. Ayal Zamir.

Netanyahu also met with soldiers from Golani’s 51st Brigade.

“It’s nearly two years since Operation Protective Edge,” he stated during the visit, noting that the two years have been relatively quiet vis-a-vis Hamas. He thanked the soldiers for their hard work to keep calm in the region.

“Tomorrow is Holocaust Remembrance Day,” he continued. “70 years ago, we were like a leaf in the wind, with no defense force, helpless as they massacred us, slaughtered us.”

“Today, we have a country and we have an army, we have the ability to defend ourselves,” he added. “What motivates me is to secure the future of Israel in its land, as for the Jewish people there is no future without our land.”
