Seven Indictments Filed Against Arab Rioters in Jerusalem
September 18, 2014The Jerusalem District Attorney’s Office filed charges against seven Arab rioters on Thursday, for offenses committed during disturbances that took place in the Abu Tor neighborhood in August.
The four young adults and three teenagers, residents of the Abu Tor and Sur Baher neighborhoods in the capital, participated in the spout of unrest which emerged after the death of 16-year-old Mohammed Abu Khdeir, who was found dead in the Jerusalem Forest in July.
On Thursday, four indictments were filed against the adults in the Jerusalem Magistrates Court and three were filed in the Juvenile Magistrates Court for rock throwing, public intimidation, and actively participating in the preparation for and actualization of further unrest.
Khalil Giosi (19) and Mahmoud Hadara (28), residents of Abu Tor, were accused of rioting, accomplice to criminal activity, aggravated assault against police, providing the means to commit a crime and connection to crimes.
Abu Tor resident Ahmed Abu Sbeitan (20) was charged with rioting and assaulting police officers, as well as attempted aggravated assault.
Muhammad Abu Sbeitan (23) a resident of Sur Baher, was similarly accused of rioting, conducting and having connection to crimes.
Three Arab minors from Jerusalem, aged 16 to 17, were accused of rioting and assaulting police officers, as well as attempted aggravated assault. The prosecution has sought to keep the minors under arrest until the end of proceedings.
Attacks have risen exponentially in recent months in Jerusalem, in a phenomenon dubbed “the silent intifada” that has been quickly spiraling out of control with lynch-mobs and even live gunfire.
While over 600 arrests were reportedly made since rioting first began in July, a tolerance for escalating unrest has grown, and a recent expose revealed that some rioters – who are being encouraged to throw fireworks and other dangerous materials at police – are as young as nine years old.
On Wednesday, hundreds of frustrated Jerusalemites staged a protest against the tolerance of the unrest, claiming Public Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovitch (Yisrael Beytenu) is personally responsible for the escalation of crime.
