Russia Hits 60 Terror Targets in 24 Hours in Syria

October 9, 2015

Russia’s air force hit more than 60 “terrorist targets” in Syria over the past 24 hours, Moscow’s military said Fridaysignificantly stepping up its bombing campaign in the war-torn country.

“Sixty-seven sorties have been carried out from the Hmeimim air base,” the deputy head of the Russian General Staff, Lieutenant General Igor Makushev, was quoted as saying by Russian news agencies. “Su-34M and Su-24SM warplanes
hit 60 terrorist targets.”

Russia conducted its first airstrikes in Syria last week, and on Wednesday Moscow ramped up its war by unleashing cruise missiles from the Caspian Sea.

But while Russia has been claiming it is targeting Islamic State (ISIS), the U.S. State Department said Wednesday that most of Russia’s barrage of airstrikes in Syria are not hitting ISIS terrorists as it claims.

In the first Russian strikes against the Homs and Hama districts of the country, an unnamed American official later said the targets were “moderate” rebel groups fighting ISIS.

France took accusations that Russia is exaggerating further on Friday, stating that 90% of Russian airstrikes have targeted “moderate” rebels in a bid to prop up Syrian President Bashar Assad.
