Nearly 600 Terror Suspects Arrested in August

August 30, 2014

Israeli security forces detained 597 terror suspects in Judea, Samaria and Jerusalem in August, raising the number of terrorists and suspected terrorists in Israeli prisons to more than 7,000, the Palestinian Prisoners Club said.

The majority of the arrests took place in eastern neighborhoods of Jerusalem and in the Judean city of Hevron – both of which are hotbeds of support for Hamas, which led attacks against Israel during Operation Protective Edge – according to the Ramallah-based NGO.

Many were arrested during violent demonstrations in support of terrorists in Gaza during the deadly 50-day war with Israel, which included the firing of thousands of rockets at Israeli civilians.

Since the June kidnapping and murder of three Israeli teenagers in Gush Etzion in Judea, at least 2,000 suspects have been questioned and detained, according to the NGO.

During Operation Protective Edge Hamas urged its supporters in Judea and Samaria to attack security forces; Mahmoud Abbas’s Fatah faction issued similar calls as well. The incitement led to a significant spike in violent attacks against Israeli civilians and security services.

Apart from riots, terrorists carried out several “lone-wolf” attacks against Israelis during that period

One man was moderately injured in a stabbing attack in Maaleh Adumim at the start of August. Just one day before one person was killed and six injured when an Arab extremist attacked civilians with a heavy digger in Jerusalem.

A 20-year-old soldier was shot and seriously wounded in a terror attack near Mount Scopus on the same day.
