Mother, young girls stabbed for ‘immodest dress’ in Alps
July 19, 2016Three young girls were eating breakfast at an Alpine resort when a fellow guest reportedly attacked them, while yelling that they were dressed immodestly. The attacker then entered the family’s room and stabbed their mother as well.
The man has since been arrested. French channel TF1 identified him as 37-year-old Mohamed B., originally from Morocco. He now lives near Paris and was visiting the resort with his wife and children. Police say he has a history of petty crimes.
A local prosecutor, however, insists that he never commented on the girls’ clothing. “I wanted to quash the rumor currently doing the rounds because on no account did this man make such comments about the fact that the attack may have been motivated by the victims’ dress code,” he said.
The girls are between the ages of 8 and 14. The youngest is being treated in a Grenoble hospital for a punctured lung. Her sisters and mother are also in a different hospital, closer to the resort. The latter three have serious wounds though their lives are not in danger.
Local Mayor Edmond Francou says he prefers “not to speculate about the motive of the attack,” particularly in the aftermath of last week’s attack in Nice.
The Telegraph reports that the two families had adjacent rooms and that the stabbed woman had helped Mohamed deal with an illness the previous night.
