Minister: ‘Mimouna is the best symbol of unity in Israel’
April 30, 2016As Passover and Shabbat end tonight, people across Israel are celebrating Mimouna.
Social Equality Minister Gila Gamliel (Likud) is taking part in the festival at the Dahan home in Yavne, along with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and his wife Sara.
Gamliel spoke to fellow attendees, saying that “the festival of Mimouna, in which the doors of everyone’s home are left open, is the best symbol of the unity between all communities and sectors in Israel.”
She added her hope that, in the spirit of Mimouna, the possibility of a national unity government will reappear and that the government will soon be expanded “so that the State of Israel can better handle the political and security challenges lying ahead.”
“I read from Pirkei Avot today, along with my soldier son,” said Netanyahu. “They wrote here in Yavne. Yavne was the an important spiritual center that ensured the continuation of the Jewish People… Most of us spent the holiday traveling in our wonderful land, seeing the development, the progress and the beauty.
“We had a quiet, kosher and happy Passover. Quiet – thanks to our soldiers, police officers and Shin Bet, all of whom protect us. It is also thanks to the proactive and determined policies of our government, the Likud government. After the days of Passover, days of matzah, I think that it is time to enjoy the wonderful mofletta (a popular Mimouna dish).”
Culture and Sport Minister Miri Regev (Likud) is also celebrating the holiday, with the Sabah family in Ashkelon.
“I’m happy that the Moroccan community has successfully turned Mimouna into a national holiday in which we open our homes and doors to the entire People of Israel. The holiday’s abundance and hospitality bring unity and happiness to the Jewish People. Come dine in our homes,” she said.”
