Liberman to Kerry: We’ll Help Fight ISIS

September 18, 2014

Israel is ready, willing, and able to help the US in the fight against ISIS, Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman told US Secretary of State John Kerry. In a meeting late Wednesday in Washington with Kerry, Liberman said that Israel realized the sensitivity of the situation, and that Israel would take on whatever role it could in order to beat back ISIS, which is a threat to Israeli interests, as well as US interests.

During the meeting, the two also discussed the situation in Gaza. Liberman said that peace and security could not develop in southern Israel as long as Hamas controlled Gaza. Anyone who wants to promote peace in the region, said Liberman, needed to take steps to end the “rule of terror in Palestinian Authority-ruled areas,” he said.

On Wednesday, the US House of Representatives approved President Barack Obama’s request to arm and train Syrian rebels in the fight against ISIS. The Senate could vote as early as Thursday, reports said. The proposal would authorize the Pentagon to provide assistance to “appropriately vetted” members of the Syrian opposition and require the administration to give Congress a detailed plan for helping the rebels before that assistance could begin.

During the discussion, Liberman told Kerry that Israel truly appreciated that the U.S. stood by its side during Operation Protective Edge, and added that Israeli citizens know that the United States is Israel’s greatest friend.
