Lapid, Netanyahu Meet For the First Time Since Elections
May 26, 2015Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Finance Minister Yair Lapid (Yesh Atid) met on Monday night, for the first time since Lapid leaving the government plunged Israel into elections six months ago.
Lapid and Netanyahu met for about 40 minutes, according to Channel 2. During the meeting, Lapid reiterated that he has no plans on joining the current coalition government and lamented what he called the “clearance sale” on his initiative to enforce the core curriculum in haredi schools, the Equal Burden of Service Law, and attempts to integrate the haredi sector further into the workforce.
The two also discussed regional security issues; Lapid reportedly expressed concern over the possibility of yet another war with Hamas in Gaza in the near future.
At the end of the meeting, Lapid quipped on Twitter that “at least I was the only person who entered a meeting with the Prime Minister and didn’t demand to be made a government minister,” taking a jab at the internal strife within Likud.
Lapid has remained particularly vocal against the Netanyahu government since the March elections, threatening legal action over the expansion of the Cabinet and issuing a no-confidence motion shortly after the government was formed.
