Jewish Home threatens new elections over security cabinet reform

May 29, 2016

Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked (Jewish Home) spoke out on Army Radio on Sunday regarding her party’s demands for security cabinet reforms, saying that the Jewish Home was not prepared to compromise on the issue.

“If we, as the members of the security cabinet, have at the end of the day the responsibility during wartime, we need to receive all of the relevant information and the complete picture.”

Shaked’s comments echoed recent demands by Education Minister and Jewish Home chief Naftali Bennett, who has called for an army official to be assigned to the security cabinet to keep members abreast of important military developments.

“Bennett has been asking for this for a while now,” noted Shaked, who said Bennett was not simply looking to stir up a coalition crisis.

“He raised the issue during coalition negotiations when the government was formed, but the Prime Minister said it was not a matter for coalition talks and that he would discuss the matter with him and deal with it afterwards. [Nevertheless] we’ve seen that it never came up over the past year,” said Shaked.

“This is not a matter [just] for our party, this isn’t an issue of ministerial positions. We will vote against the inclusion of Liberman into the government if this issue isn’t solved. It isn’t a difficult issue; many committees have been formed on the subject. We want to be certain that the issue will be resolved. Many committees have been [convened] on the issue with findings that were never implemented.”

Shaked highlighted the importance of the issue to her party, saying the Jewish Home was prepared to split from the government if the reforms were not adopted.

“We don’t think that this needs to lead to elections, but if it does need to go there, we’re ready for it. This issue can be resolved, it’s an important matter and has nothing to do with politics.”
