Israel-U.S. relations to turn a new page post elections
February 9, 2016As the New Hampshire primaries get underway today (Feb. 9th) in the United States, former Senator Joseph Lieberman told Israeli Army Radio that “no matter who becomes president the relationship between Israel and the United States will improve.”
“When we go back and listen to President Barack Obama’s Cairo speech in 2009, when he called for a freeze in construction in Judea and Samaria, from that point and onward there was very little trust between the sides”, Lieberman explained. “The relationship will see a new page turned over after the election, regardless of which candidate is chosen.”
Lieberman spoke about the current primary race for the candidacy of both parties. “These are the most unusual primary elections that I have seen, and the most unusual part about them is Donald Trump. I have never seen a candidate like him. I have spoken with many of my associates, most of whom are retired, and we all concur that if any of us had said even one of the things that Trump is saying, our campaigns would have been over, or at the very least suffered tremendously.”
The former vice presidential candidate doesn’t believe that Trump has a legitimate shot at the Presidency. “If Trump had won in Iowa, then I think he would have won out and become the candidate. In light of the results, I think that it will be a tight race until the end, even perhaps until the establishment of the Republican Congress in July,” said Lieberman.
Lieberman discussed the meaning of the primary elections in the United States. “The primaries, for both parties, are a war over the future of the party itself. It is impressive to see a Democratic candidate who describes himself as a socialist succeed as much as Bernie Sanders has, and the ironic thing about it all is that Sanders, being the older candidate, is being supported primarily by the younger generation.” Lieberman added that he believe that Clinton will eventually be elected as the Democratic candidate because she will hold the majority in states where there is a large Hispanic and African American population.
