Israel returns body of car ramming terrorist

May 3, 2016

The IDF on Tuesday night returned to the Palestinian Authority (PA) the body of the terrorist who had earlier injured three IDF soldiers in a car ramming attack near the town of Dolev in Samaria, before being shot dead.

One soldier was seriously injured in the attack and was evacuated to the Tel Hashomer Hospital by helicopter. Two other soldiers were lightly injured and were taken to the Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem.

Israel confirmed the reports, originally published in PA-based media, that the terrorist’s body was returned, with an official telling Arutz Sheva the return was authorized by the political echelon.

The move breaks with the policy announced by Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu before the Passover holiday, according to which Israel would stop handing over bodies of terrorists for burial by their families, but the official explained that Netanyahu had authorized the Defense and Public Security Ministers to return terrorist bodies so long as certain conditions – such as no massive funeral for the terrorist – were met by the other side.

Late last month there was an incident whereby the IDF returned the body of a terrorist who carried out an attack to his family, due to what was later described as an “error”. The IDF later launched an inquiry into the incident.
