ISIS Captive Urges UK to Negotiate His Release
September 18, 2014The brutal Islamic State (ISIS), which has committee numerous atrocities and beheaded two American journalists in recent weeks as it conquers Iraq and Syria, has released a new video of a British journalist asking for negotiations.
In the video released Thursday John Cantlie, who lists his former employees as the Sunday Times, the Sun and Sunday Telegraph, can be seen talking while dressed in the same orange shirt US journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff, as well UK aid worker David Haines, wore while they were brutally beheaded by ISIS terrorists.
Cantlie says in the three-minute clip that he was abducted by ISIS in November 2012, going on to note that since then the terrorist group has captured “a land mass bigger than Britain and many other nations,” speaking in scripted ISIS propaganda.
The British captive goes on to say that over the next few programs he will tell the “truth,” hinting that the video is only the first of many in ISIS’s latest scheme of manipulating the sympathies of the West.
“Now I know what you’re thinking,” Cantlie is seen saying “You’re thinking, ‘he’s only doing this because he’s a prisoner. He’s got a gun at his head and he’s being forced to do this.’ Right?”
The journalist continues “well, it’s true. I am a prisoner. That I cannot deny. But seeing as I’ve been abandoned by my government and my fate now lies in the hands of the Islamic State, I have nothing to lose.”
Cantlie calls on the UK to negotiate with the terrorist organization so as to secure their captives, even as he criticizes western countries for their military involvement in the Middle East.
“After two disastrous and hugely unpopular wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, why is it that our governments appear so keen to get involved in yet another un-winnable conflict?” asked Cantlie in the film.
There have been suspicions that the British national who beheaded Foley, Sotloff and Haines is none other than former National Health Services (NHS) doctor Shajul Islam, who was arrested and charged with kidnapping Cantlie in 2012.
Islam was released after Cantlie was unable to give testimony; his medical license has since been suspended. The doctor’s family says they are unsure of his whereabouts, as well as those of his brother – 21 year-old Razul, who has been confirmed to have joined ISIS in Syria.
ISIS has been involved in a highly sophisticated recruiting and propaganda campaign through the internet and social media, releasing Hollywood-style propaganda films with advanced cinematic techniques.
The terror group reportedly has over 30,000 fighters, including thousands of foreign jihadists from the West – a fact that has led to great tension in western countries and efforts to combat the threat of returning terrorists.
