Iran Blocked Holocaust Education Website Throughout 2014
July 1, 2015Iran continued to block a website dedicated to providing information on the Holocaust and Jewish-Muslim relations, the US State Department revealed.
According to the State Department’s annual report on human rights, Iran’s government has continuously blocked the Persian-language website of the Aladdin Project, a foreign-based NGO launched by the Foundation for the Memory of the Shoah.
In addition to being rendered inaccessible, the educational website has also been greatly demonized in Iranian press.
In November the 2013 the Fars News Agency called it a creation of “international Zionism” that sought “to recognize the Zionists’ fabricated narrative about the Holocaust, which will enable them to present the creation of [Israel] as both legitimate and necessary.”
Holocaust denial as well as other types of anti-Semitism also continued into 2014, the State Department found.
In May, members of the Islamic Consultive Assembly summoned Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and reprimanded him for calling the Holocaust a “tragedy” in an interview with a German television station.
Earlier in 2014, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei claimed the Holocaust’ historical reality was “unknown” and questioned if it “actually did happen.”
Meanwhile, past media reports placing Iran’s Jewish population at 25,000 are grossly inaccurate, the report stated, naming a 2012 census that found Iran had 8,756 Jewish residents as proof.
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu responded to the report on Monday, slamming the West for ignoring Iran’s blatant human rights violations and further conceding to it as negotiations for a nuclear deal continue.
