Hot air balloon disaster in Texas leaves 16 dead

July 30, 2016

Sixteen people riding a hot air balloon over Lockhart, Texas were killed on Saturday when the balloon caught on fire and crashed.

While the cause of the accident is as of yet unknown, the crash site was reported to be located directly underneath high-capacity power lines. Local officials say there were no survivors from the accident.

The incident occurred Caldwell County, some 30 miles south of Austin in central Texas.

Fox 7 reporter Marcus Officer said the air balloon flight was supposed to be a one-hour ride, but that those following the balloon on the ground lost contact after 26 minutes.

Governor Greg Abbot issued a statement, calling the accident a “heartbreaking tragedy.”

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families, as well as the Lockhart community,” said Abbot.
