EU envoys declare: Attacks on Jews are an attack on us all

May 4, 2016

A delegation representing the European Union issued a statement on Wednesday, just hours before the beginning Holocaust Remembrance Day ceremonies begin in Israel.

Alongside a joint statement by European Union embassies in Israel, the EU delegation declared that Europe would stand firm against anti-Semitism, calling attacks on Jews “attacks on us all”.

The statement highlighted the EU’s egalitarian principles, noting that attacks on racial or religious minorities were an affront to the EU’s values and an assault on its underlying purpose.

“The EU Delegation to the State of Israel, together with all Embassies of EU Member States in Israel, joins people in Israel commemorating today the deaths of six million Jews – innocent men, women, and children, murdered simply for being Jewish.”

“Remembering the Shoah means for us recalling our joint responsibility for the future, continuing to stand strong against anti-Semitism, prejudice, and racial discrimination in all their forms. It is our duty to fight anti-Semitism on every front.”

The delegation also acknowledged the rising tide of anti-Semitism in Europe, noting the sense of insecurity pervading in many Jewish communities.

“We cannot and will not accept that Jewish communities in Europe do not feel safe. Attacks on Jews are attacks on all of us – against our way of living, against tolerance and against our identity.”

“The European Union was built on the foundations of our values of democracy, human dignity, and fundamental rights. We are determined to defend these values against hate, violence, and fanaticism. Never forget. Never again.”
