Druze Ex-MK Headed for Jail for Meeting Terror Chief in Syria
August 31, 2015A panel of Supreme Court judges rejected on Monday an appeal by former Balad MK Said Nafaa against his conviction and sentencing for contact with a foreign agent in the course of an illegal trip to Syria, eight years ago. He will serve 12 months in jail.
In 2007, Nafaa helped organize a visit by Druze clergymen to Syria, which he took part in. During the trip, he met Talal Naji, deputy secretary-general of the PFLP terror group.
Nafaa was convicted of exiting Israel illegally to an enemy state, assisting others to exit illegally to an enemy state, and contact with a foreign agent.
Beside the 12 months he will spend in jail, he received a six-month suspended sentence for three years.
Judge Elyakim Rubinstein determined that Nafaa does not have parliamentary immunity for his actions.
“The immunity was not meant to let MKs carry out offenses – including ones committed for political, social or values-related reasons – but to allow them to carry out their duties,” the judge wrote. “In this case, the appellant’s deeds are independent criminal acts that were not the result of legitimate parliamentary activity and its ‘natural risks.’
“An MK is not a travel agent for illegal trips and for ‘criminal tourism’ in enemy states, and he is not allowed to turn his term in office into a tool for planned meetings with heads of terror organizations,” added Judge Rubinstein.
