Despite Hamas Threats, Ben Gurion Airport Operating as Usual

August 21, 2014

Hundreds of passengers have arrived so far this morning to Ben Gurion International Airport, as Hamas’s threats to fire rockets at the airport as of 6 a.m. this morning fell flat.

Hamas’s “military wing” had warned foreign airlines on Wednesday against flying into Tel Aviv, threatening to step up its six-week conflict with Israel after firing more than 100 rockets on Israeli civilians and pulling out of peace talks.

“We are warning international airlines and press them to stop flying into Ben Gurion airport from 6 am (0300 GMT) Thursday,” Ezzedine Al-Qassam
Brigades spokesman Abu Obeida stated Wednesday, in a televised speech.

But although terrorists fired a total of 175 rockets at Israel on Tuesday, as night fell so did the number of rockets, with only one launched the entire night.

The 6 a.m. “deadline” came and went and still

In a statement Wednesday morning, the Airports Authority said that Ben Gurion Airport was operating as per usual, and that some 60,000 travelers were scheduled to pass through it Wednesday.

An airport official told Arutz Sheva that authorities were not concerned about Hamas’s threats, given that the airport is amply protected against any potential attacks.

The official added that airport authorities were aware that in the past month or so Hamas has attempted to disrupt Israeli air  travel via its threats.

The terror group briefly succeeded in doing so last month, when a rocket struck a house in the city of Yehud, close to the airport, prompting several airlines to temporarily halt flights. Flights were resumed shortly thereafter when it was clarified that there was no current threat to the airport itself.
