Deri invites French Jews to make Aliyah to Israel
February 11, 2016Interior Minister and Shas chairman Aryeh Deri met Thursday with France’s Chief Rabbi, Rabbi Joseph Haim Sitruk, and discussed the situation of French Jewry, and the Jewish concerns following the terrorist attacks in the country.
Deri prayed and read from the Torah at the synagogue in the Lucia de Hirsch Jewish school in Paris. After prayer, the minister spoke to students and teachers saying that “Many Jews of the community immigrated to Israel already and some of you are making Aliyah soon. When you arrive in Israel none of your traditional customs will change.”
“All Jews in the world are children of the Almighty and therefore the Almighty is sorrowful when his children drift away from His path. You have a very important role – to bring the rest of the young Jews in France, and explain to them benevolently about Judaism. I invite you all to make Aliyah to Israel and if you experience any problems, contact me and I will try to be helpful.”
A festive reception for Deri was held Wednesday night by the umbrella organization of rabbis in France. “We are all responsible for each and every Jew, those living in Israel and those living around the globe. Our mission is to strengthen Jewish communities around the world,” said Deri.
“In recent years, tens of thousands of French Jews who were accustomed to a certain lifestyle immigrated to Israel. Our mission as a government is to ensure that Olim can attend schools in Israel which combine vocational and Torah studies.”
Regarding the security situation in Israel, Deri said, “We are going through a difficult period. There are near-daily attacks, stabbings, car rammings and shootings, but Israel is strong and determined. IDF, police and other security forces are working at their full power and determination and I have no doubt that we will overcome this period as we went through more difficult times in the past.”
