Bodies of Two Avalanche Victims Arrive in Israel
October 20, 2014The bodies of Agam Luria, 23, and Lt. Tamar Ariel, 25, who were killed in last week’s deadly avalanche in Nepal, arrived in Israel on Monday night.
Ariel, who was Israel’s first religious female air force navigator, will be brought to rest on Tuesdy afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the cemetery in her home town of Masuot Yitzhak. Luria will be brought to rest at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon at the cemetery in Kibbutz Yifat.
Another Israeli victim in the avalanche, Nadav Shoham, was laid to rest on Sunday at the cemetery near where he was born and grew up, in Mitzpe Hoshaya.
Earlier on Monday, the body of a fourth Israeli killed in last week’s deadly avalanche, 36-year-old Michal Cherkesky of Givatayim, was identified by search and rescue teams.
Cherkesky was missing for six days before her body was discovered Monday morning. Her family had told reporters they were “praying for a miracle”, and that they feared she was stranded without aid supplies or communications equipment at 5,000 meters (approximately 16,000 feet) high along the mountain pass.
The death toll in the avalanche has climbed steadily since hikers were caught off-guard by a sudden blizzard in the Himalayan Mountains. At least 40 people have been killed in total, making it the worst hiking disaster in Nepal’s history.
Scores more were left injured – some severely – and the number of fatalities is expected to rise, as recovery efforts make slow progress, hindered by the extreme conditions.
