Another Israeli-Arab indicted for plans to join ISIS

February 8, 2016

A Bedouin citizen of Israel was indicted Monday at the Be’er Sheva Magistrates Court for attempting to join the Islamic State (ISIS) terror organization in Syria.

A resident of Hura, Najoun Abu Alkianan was recently arrested and questioned by security forces. The Southern District Attorney’s Office is expected to ask the court for remand throughout proceedings against him.

According to the indictment, Abu Alkianan began in 2014 to participate in various activities related to ISIS in the Bedouin town. These included attending lectures at the Hamza Mosque given by Abu Alkian Otman, who died fighting for ISIS in Syria.

Abu Alkianan also reportedly met with Fadi Abu Alkian, who is under investigation for other security-related offenses, and learned of Otman’s intentions to leave for Syria.

The defendant and Alkian planned to travel to to Syria together via Turkey, and from there join up with ISIS terrorists.

To prepare for joining Islamic State, the two watched the group’s recruitment videos and underwent physical training. While the two did not end up leaving for Syria, they continued to meet over the last year to discuss the possibility and watch ISIS videos.

Only six months ago, several Hura residents were arrested for the same offense. A total of five were indicted, with two of the defendants being sentenced to multi-year prison terms.
