Algeria: IS Splinter Group Kidnaps French Citizen
September 22, 2014A French man purported to have been kidnapped in Algeria on Sunday appeared in a video on Monday saying he had been kidnapped by an Algeria-based “Islamic State” splinter group, called the Caliphate Soldiers, according to Reuters.
The man, who gives his name, age and date of birth, said he had arrived in Algeria on September 20 and been taken on September 21.
“I am in the hands of Jund al-Khilifa, an Algerian armed group. This armed group is asking me to ask you (President Francois Hollande) to not intervene in Iraq,” the man said, according to Reuters.
“They are holding me as a hostage and I ask you Mr. President to do everything to get me out of this bad situation and I thank you,” he added.
If authentic, the release of the video is similar to the methods used by IS, which has overtaken large swathes of land in Iraq and Syria.
Islamic State has released videos showing the execution of the American journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff, as well as a video showing the murder of David Haines, a British aid worker.
Last week, the group released a new video of a British journalist, John Cantlie, asking for negotiations to take place for his release.
It is already known that there are IS “copycats” in Egypt, mainly the Ansar Bayt Al-Maqdis group which has beheaded several people in the Sinai Peninsula, similar to what IS does.
