31 Civilians Killed in Terror Attacks Since Last Memorial Day

April 19, 2015

In honor of Israel’s upcoming Memorial Day, Yom Hazikaron, the National Insurance Institute has published a report documenting the number of Israeli civilians killed in hostilies since the War of Independence as well as in the past year.

According to NII’s report, 2,538 Israeli civilians have been murdered in terror-related attacks since the birth of the Jewish state. This figure also includes the 122 foreign tourists and workers killed in attacks.

In the past year, since Yom Hazikaron 2014, 31 civilians have been killed in acts of terrorism.  This presents a significantly sharp rise is terrorism as compared to the figures last year, in which only two citizens were murdered.

The increase in victims can be attributed to the wave of terrorism that has infiltrated Israel in the past ten months, beginning with the abduction and murders of three teenage boys in Gush Etzion and continuing into Operation Protective Edge and beyond.

Among the most macabre terror attacks this past year are the murders of Gilad Sha’ar (16), Eyal Yifrah (19), and Naftali Frankel (16) in June; the massacre at the Har Nof synagogue in Jerusalem in November; as well as a series of car terror attacks within the capital city.

Since the beginning of the Second Intifada in 2000 until the present, some 1,017 civilians have been killed in acts of terrorism.

Terrorist attacks have left 2,997 children without one parent, and 101 children complete orphans. A total of 850 widows and widowers lost their spouses to attacks, as well as 943 bereaved parents who lost their children.

The National Insurance Institute’s CEO, Professor Mor Yosef, said, with the publication of the report, that the treatement and rehabilitation of victims of terror and the families of terror victims is an important national mission.

According to Yosef, the Terror Victims branch of NII paid in 2014 alone 495 million ($126.5 million) in pensions and benefits to thousands of injured victims as well as the families of slain civilians.
